Which January transfer could define the Serie A title race? | by Pierpaolo Marino

Serie A’s big sides have failed to make major signings during the first part of January window, though they are all expected to bring in new faces at the end of the month. This year’s Serie A season, by the way, is so competitive that January transfers can define the title race in one way or another.

So, let’s try find out the January transfer strategies and targets of all the teams involved in the Scudetto race.

NAPOLI – The Serie A table leaders need to buy at least two players who can hold a candle to senior midfielders and defenders. The likes of Nikola Maksimovic, Lorenzo Tonelli, Daniele Rugani, Federico Barba, Andrea Ranocchia, André Gomes, Herrera, Christoph Kramer, Matias Vecino and Badu have been all linked with a move to the San Paolo. They only thing that I’d advise is to sign two quality players who can guarantee Champions League qualification, regardless of their cost.

JUVENTUS – They have dropped Ezequiel Lavezzi after that they had been close to signing him in December. The club’s priority is a top-class central midfielder in general, Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan in particular. The Germany International with Turkish passport can be important in both Serie A and Champions League title races as the Old Lady will face Bayern Munich in the knock-out stage of Europe’s elite tournament.

INTER – With Mauro Icardi who needs more assists inside the box, both Ezequiel Lavezzi and Eder Citadin can be the answer to the Argentinean’s needs. Roberto Mancini is also seeking a quality playmaker in the middle of the pitch. If Freddy Guarin will leave the club, I expect Inter to replace him with Sampdoria’s Roberto Soriano, while I don’t think that Inter will sign Fernando during the current transfer campaign.

FIORENTINA – La Viola have just signed Tino Costa from Genoa. Benfica’s Lisandro Lopez would be an added value for Paulo Sousa’s defense, though it will hard to persuade the Portuguese side to sell him. Philippe Mexes or Sebastian De Maio could join the Franchi instead.  If Giuseppe Rossi will sign with Genoa on a six-months loan, Fabio Quagliarella is going to replace the former Man Utd youngster as Atalanta are not eager to sell Alejandro ‘El Papu’ Gomez.

ROMA – The true top player will be….Luciano Spalletti. The Italian manager needs a left-back and has set sights on Barcelona’s Adriano and on his former player at Zenit Saint Petersburg Domenico Criscito. Spalletti could also agree to sign Diego Perotti who has been close to joining the Capitolines before Rudi Garcia’s sacking.
