Benitez: ‘Daddy Moratti didn’t want to sell his pupils’

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has released an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport to speak about his time at Inter.

Benitez was appointed by Massimo Moratti to replace José Mourinho after the Champions League win in 2010. But his spell at Inter did only last six months: “I won two titles at Inter: an Italian Super Cup and the Club’s World Cup”, Benitez said.

“Moratti is a gentleman but he is in love with Inter and is way too emotive. He was doing everything for his players but he became nervous in a second after a bad result.”

“I didn’t leave because of the senators. I had the support of Samuel, Cambiasso, Cordoba, Milito and Zanetti. Eto’o scored 18 goals with me. Let’s say daddy Moratti didn’t want to sell his pupils.”

“I had 15 players who were over 30. We had a plan to rejuvenate the roster but we had the problem of the Financial Fair Play and I knew it when the market was already closed.”
