Lazio star defender Stefan de Vrij is set to have showdown talks with the club over a new contract, dealing a blow to hopes of Liverpool and Juventus of signing him, reports say.

The Dutch defender’s representatives are flying to Rome either today or tomorrow and it is believed that a decisive meeting regarding a new deal for the 25-year-old will be held in the next 48 hours.

The move is being brought about by the biancocelesti to make sure no clubs come in and attempt to sign the Dutchman in January, which just two months away.

De Vrij’s current deal expires at the end of the season and clubs will also look to sign him on a pre-contract agreement, if he doesn’t sign a new contract. Lazio’s decision to hold talks over a contract though, has dealt a blow to both Liverpool and Juventus’ hopes of signing their top defensive target.

De Vrij has been an important player for Simone Inzaghi’s men this season, appearing ten times already. He has scored twice too.
