ANALYSIS: Don't blame Inter's scoring woes on Icardi

    • Cristian Giudici, translated by Edo Dalmonte
Inter are allergic to scoring. Nine games into the season, the Nerazzurri have scored… exactly nine goals. A paltry total for a side with Scudetto ambitions, and that has banked a lot on making it back into Serie A’s top three.

It’s easy to point the finger at star striker Mauro Icardi, who is coming off a prolific 22-goal campaign in 2014-2015. Too easy, almost. Why? He has, admittedly, only scored twice... out of three shots on goal! This isn’t a case of Occam’s Razor: the fault doesn’t lie with the Argentine, or at least not only him. He’s being give very poor service, and that has to change.

As usual, Roberto Mancini has opted for a carrot and stick approach.
“Mauro is young, and struggles with the idea of not scoring. It happens to all strikers, what matters is that he keeps calm and always does his bit in the buildup.”

“It’s a good job that we have many attacking players who can play instead of him, he could well end up on the bench”.

In my opinion, Inter need to keep trusting Icardi, even to do so blindly. After all, they like him enough to have given him a new contract and promote him to captain.

He still needs to develop an understanding with Stefan Jovetic, but the only way for the two of them to get there… is to keep playing together. To get over this allergy, Inter can’t afford to without these two.
