Should Napoli have sold Manolo Gabbiadini?

There was a time when Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis was seriously thinking about selling Manolo Gabbiadini to Bundesliga giants Wolfsburg last January.

The Germans put on the table a € 25 million bid for the former Sampdoria star, who is not considered a regular starter by Maurizio Sarri. The Germans were ready to make a straight payment with no installments, allowing Napoli to reinvest fresh cash in new recruits.

Former Sevilla FC striker (and Napoli-born) Ciro Immoblie could have replaced Gabbiadini joining the San Paolo on-loan with buy-out clause but the player’s entourage, eventually decided for his return to Torino as the player was looking for more playing time then what he got both at Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla over the last couple of seasons.

As previously mentioned, Gabbiadini is not a regular started under Maurizio Sarri, who considers him as the natural replacement of Gonzalo Higuain and not a back-up to both Lorenzo Insigne or José Maria Callejon, despite he played winger during Rafa Benitez’s reign last term.

Napoli are now wondering how to revamp a player that was acquired for a fee of € 15 million just one year ago and if accepting Wolfsburg’s offer would have been the right thing to do for both the player and the club.
