INTERMANIA: Medel over Banega is an insult to football

Inter went down with all hands against Atalanta yesterday, but the stats tell us that it may not have been the biggest surprise of the weekend. Beyond the Nerazzurri’s own struggles, the Orobici’s Coach, Giampiero Gasperini, has now won his fourth straight game against them, the third consecutive loss for Frank De Boer.

Inter are now closer to the relegation zone (5 points) than they are to the Champions League places (8), and will await either Wednesday’s game against Torino or Friday’s annual general meeting to see what to do with the Dutchman.

One of the things that is truly baffling is the extent to which Gary Medel seems to be untouchable: the Chilean was, in fact, played against Atalanta on Sunday, while talented playmaker Ever Banega was left on the bench- nothing short of an insult to football. While the Pitbull wasn’t the worst player on the pitch, one needs to do more than just kick opponents in order to be worthy of this shirt.

Or, indeed, worthy of the reported 2.5 million deal that the Chilean is set to sign (he currently earns 1.6m), which would keep him here until 2020. While the grit and energy he puts in would do Inter a lot of good if it was shared by his team-mates, it isn’t enough by itself.
