Roma prefer Giaccherini to Depay for January, ex Black Cats flop has agreed

As we’ve written in these pages before, Roma need a replacement for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian star is set to jet off to Africa in early January to play for his country, leaving the Giallorossi without one of their most talented players.

Rai Sport confirmed last night on one of their TV shows that Roma prefer Emanuele Giaccherini to Manchester United flop Memphis Depay, and that the Italy international has already agreed to a move.

Gabbiadini has only played 122 minutes this season, a bad sign for someone who works under Maurizio Sarri, who has been known to snub certain players completely.

Giaccherini moved to Sunderland in 2013, but only contributed four Premier League goals in seasons before returning to Italy.

He earned some praise with his stellar performance at Euro 2016, despite his limited technical skills.

Even then, the former Cesena man is known for his flexibility, being used by Juventus and Italy Coach Antonio Conte on the wing, as a full-back or even in the middle of the park.

Giaccherini would essentially be a replacement for Alessandro Florenzi, too, who went down with a cruciate ligament tear earlier this season.

Roma prefer him to depay because he’s cheap, too, something which the Dutch international isn’t likely to be.
