Ten things wrong with Roma that AREN'T Rudi Garcia's fault | by Stefano Agresti

Now that Rudi Garcia is gone, almost everyone has deserted him. The Giallorossi community is all but sold on the returning Luciano Spalletti, from the fans to those who want a different team, to those nostalgic types who can still remember that the Tuscan coach had lost the team and may still have been with Daniele De Rossi and Francesco Totti. For more on the latter, check out Marco Demicheli's well researched piece.

Obviously, it's easier to quit on who is out of favour and side with his replacement - also a potential winner. We, however, still believe that Rudi Garcia was the victim (a well-remunerated one, by all means) of a badly run club. Though he certainly has his share of the blame, we can also think of ten big problems that definitely weren't his fault.

Is it Garcia's fault that the right side of defence is being entrusted to Alessandro Florenzi, who would be far more precious in midfield? Why are the only other alternatives and average player in Torosidis and a spent Maicon?

Is it Garcia's fault that Sabatini underestimated Castan and Rudiger's recovery times, and overestimated Gyomber's ability, a second mediocre defender to be brought over oh-so-casually from Catania after Spolli?

Is it Garcia's fault that only Lucas Digne is fit to play on the left, and that "fit" is frankly the wrong word when you consider that he's run out of steam? Where's the replacement there?

Is it Garcia's fault that Iturbe was paid a packet, only to do nothing, whilst Juventus went on to spend the same sum on Paulo Dybala a year later, the same Dybala who is now winning games single-handedly and bringing La Joya back to Turin?

Is it Garcia's fault that Roma barely run for half an hour, and ship in most of their goals towards the end. Is it his fault that Pallotta imposed his own strength and conditioning coaches on him?

Is it Garcia's fault that the president delegitimised him last summer by forcing him to change his staff, bringing his credibility into doubt for everyone (the players and the Giallorossi community) to see?

Is it Garcia's fault that the Olimpico is empty, that the Curva Sud is deserted despite having actually sold out all its available season tickets?

Is it Garcia's fault that the team is in Rome, Pallotta is in Boston and that the two are separated by an ocean of incompetent staff?

Is it Garcia's fault that, as of last January, he's been given the likes of Spolli, Gyomber, Rudiger, Ibarbo, Doumbia, Iago Falque and Vainqueur to work with, whilst the only quality signing, Dzeko, has completely flunked his first run with the club?

Is it Garcia's fault that this American Roma is a disaster, and has brutally got rid of coaches who have gone on to succeed overseas whilst the Lupa fails to fill her trophy cabinet?

We wish Garcia the best of luck. After all, those who have managed to escape Pallotta have often done very well: just look at Luis Garcia and Claudio Ranieri. Maybe it'll be Rudi's turn to top a major European league in a couple of years' time.
