El Shaarawy: 'We need to focus on Chievo, not Napoli's game'

Stefano El Shaarawy has thanked Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti for having faith in him.

"I could never have imagined an adventure of this magnitude" El Shaarawy told Sky Sport Italia, "I'd like to thank Coach Spalletti for giving me the chance to play all the time, and to trust me to do so".

The former AC Milan star had had a very difficult season before returning to Italy, Ligue 1 club Monaco dumping him one game short of a threshold which would have obliged them to buy him from AC Milan. The Rossoneri themselves let the Pharaoh down by loaning him for a second time to AS Roma... where the 23-year-old has bloomed once more, netting 7 times in 14 Serie A games.

"I'm sorry about what has happened at Milan this season, I have reflected on many an occasion about what will go through my head when I return there".

ElSha also encouraged his team-mates to focus on Roma's upcoming game against Chievo Verona. Two points short of Napoli with as many games to go, the Romanisti are hoping to snatch (you've guessed it) second place away from them, something which would guarantee them a place in next year's Champions League Group Stage, and save them a tiring, risky qualifying draw.

"This could be a decisive weekend in the fight for second place. Napoli have a difficult matchup on the road to Torino, but we need to focus solely on beating Chievo".
