EXCLUSIVE: CM’s Refereeing Favours Table (Updated after Matchday 25)

Yes, it’s the return of Calciomercato’s very own Team Bias table, where we rank every team in Serie A according to the number of times that referees have either given them a huge helping hand, or handicapped them with a critical error. We begin with the refereeing lowlights of the week.

There’s a penalty missing in Lazio - Verona, with Scaligeri goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini bringing down Alessandro Matri in the penalty area. Matri himself would later be allowed to play on in an offside position, from where he served Felipe Anderson with a key assist for Lazio’s third goal.

Torino got away with a pretty obvious foul from another former Juventus, Cristian Molinaro, on Robin Quaison.

Sampdoria and Atalanta, meanwhile, both had something to thank the referee for: Sampdoria for not losing Dodo over an intentional elbow to Jasmin Kurtic’s face, and for being spared their bluses when Mauricio Pinilla looked to have broken the deadlock… only to have his goal ruled out for a non-existent offside. Atalanta themselves were lucky that the referee didn’t see Rafael Toloi bring down Andrea Ranocchia in the box.

Paolo Mazzoleni’s magnum opus, the Fiorentina - Inter game, arguably helped Inter out more than the Viola, Alex Telles’ blatant handball in the box not being spotted either by the referee or by his assistants. That would have also been a second yellow and a sending off for the Brazilian, who was ironically sent packing later on for a non-existent foul on Federico Bernardeschi.
