EXCLUSIVE Romano: why Sampdoria are sacking Zenga

    • M.G.
Yesterday, Sampdoria president Maurizio Ferrero got rid of Walter Zenga following a 2-0 home loss to Fiorentina, despite the club sitting in a respectable 10th place.

On the face of it, it seemed that Ferrero did not appreciate his head coach flying to Dubai right after the loss to Fiorentina.

Yet Ferrero himself had agreed to Zenga’s trip, so it could have just as likely been another pretext to fire the former Inter goalkeeper.

In reality –Romano explains- Zenga had been virtually fired after the Europa League game lost to Vojvodina and his situation worsened with the signing of Antonio Cassano, with the former Inter goalkeeper never really being consulted.

Moreover, Ferrero always wanted Vincenzo Montella, whom he will not attempt to sign.

It won’t be easy to sign the 41-year-old, who still has a contract with Fiorentina and a €5 million release clause. Montella’s agent Alessandro Lucci is already working to find a solution, and, in the meantime, Zenga is still waiting for a phone call.
