Barcelona’s interest in unhappy Chelsea defender confirmed

Our colleagues at goal.com have confirmed that Barcelona are interested in signing unhappy Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in the winter transfer window.

The blaugrana are looking for a new right-back who can temporary fill the gap left by Dani Alves last summer. Sergi Roberto is being adapted to that position, but Luis Enrique wants a natural right-back to play in right defence.

Give that big clubs are not open to sell their big names in the winter transfer window, Barcelona want a temporary replacement for Dani Alves before signing a young, long-term replacement for the Brazilian defender next summer.

Ivanovic has been shortlisted by the Nou Camp outfit alongside Glen Johnson, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Dario Srna who are all experienced players that can also play the Champions League with Barcelona from February. Ivanovic’s Chelsea did not qualify for any European competition last season just like Johnson’s Stoke, whilst Srna is playing in Europa League with Shakhtar and Lichtsteiner’s not been included in the Champions League squad list by Juventus.

Inter and Juventus had also been linked with welcoming Ivanovic's services in January, but the Serbian defender is not likely to join either clubs in the January transfer window despite his contract's expiring at the end of the season.
