Exclusive: Roma, Gerson - the €16 million mystery

Having been acquired for €16.6 million and taken up one of the club’s non-EU places, Brazilian midfielder Gerson is yet to set Serie A alight, having arrived with a reputation for being one of the best youngsters to come out of the country.

His former President at Fluminense, Ricardo Tenorio, has been talking exclusively to Calciomercato.com. He was asked about why he thinks the 19-year-old has had a lack of first-team opportunities, to which he responded; “Roma took him with a view to developing him. I don’t know what the problem is but personally, I think it will take time to get acclimatised and used to the new tactics. He still has a lot of maturing to do”.

He continued; “He has to get to know Italy and its football. His quality is not in question so he needs time in my opinion”. Asked if he was returned to Fluminense, would that then spark a return in the direction of Juventus, who also wanted to bring him to Serie A. Tenorio replied; “That would be a great thing but it’s difficult to say what is really going on”.

Finally, would there be a chance of the player heading out on-loan in January? “Possibly, but Roma have to make this decision of how to handle him. It may be that if he was to go to another club he would be able to showcase his talent as the boy ultimately needs minutes on the field”.
