Juventus, Buffon’s right: it’s time to switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation

“We won an important game against Napoli, but if I think about a Champions League knock-out stage game, like a quarter-final or a semi-final, then I believe we still need to improve”, that’s what Gianluigi Buffon told La Gazzetta dello Sport today.

The Old Lady’s captain is self-critical despite Juventus being pretty close to make it through the Champions’ League group stage and sitting on top of the Serie A table. Higuain’s winner on Saturday night against his old club Napoli was vital for Juventus’ Serie A campaign, but the bianconeri’s performances was still not as good and fluent as one would expect from the best team of the league.

True, Allegri has to do without the likes of Paulo Dybala and Marko Pjaca who can definitely add some unpredictability in the final third, but with the return of Claudio Marchisio, Allegri could switch Juventus to a 4-2-3-1 formation from next Wednesday, when the Old Lady hosts Lyon in a key Champions League clash.

It’s time for the Old Lady’s boss to use a 4-2-3-1 system which is also used by the majority of European clubs. Allegri used the same system in the last 30 minutes of the Dynamo Zagreb clash and could propose it from the first minute against the Ligue1 giants.

Higuain would play as centre forward and could get more and better services from both wingers and from Pjanic who could play as attacking midfielder behind the Argentinean. Claudio Marchisio and Sami Khedira would play in centre midfield.

Wednesday’s Champions League clash is not a quarter final or a semifinal but it’s the first decisive game in Europe this season as a win would help Juventus to secure the qualification to the last 16 stage. Juventus must win and they should do it in style.
