EXCLUSIVE Romano: Gonzalo Higuain puts contract talks on hold until the end of the season

What’s behind Gonzalo Higuain’s contract extension with Napoli? According to CM.com’s transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano there are no problems between the Argentinean striker and Napoli, though the Partenopei have been trying to extend the Argentina International stay at the San Paolo for more than one year now.

Both Gonzalo and his agent (and brother) Nicolas are calm and relaxed, but they are also in no rush to open contract renewal talks with Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Napoli would offer the 28-year-old hit-man € 8 million a year plus bonuses, which means Higuain could earn somewhere around € 10 million a year, just as much as he would earn in any Premier League or La Liga top club.

The prolific hit-man, however, doesn’t want to change some clauses on his contract, including his € 95 million release clause which would be further raised in case of contract extension.

In addition, the former Real Madrid striker wants to wait until the end of the season to see if any top European side will make an approach to sign him. Of course, lot of big clubs have already knocked both Napoli’s and Higuain’s door, but yet again, the Argentinean star is no rush to make a decision over his future.

In the meantime, Napoli will meet Martin Caceres’ agent Daniel Fonseca in the next few days to carry on negotiations to complete the Uruguay International’s switch as a free agent, whereas the Juventus defender runs out of contract in the summer.
