Sassuolo 'spotted Berardi playing in a casual game' says former DS

Udinese’s director of sport has praised Juventus Coach Max Allegri, with whom he had worked at Sassuolo.

“He had already agreed to move to Lecco,” he told the Messaggero Veneto, “but then they didn’t buy the players he asked for, so he accepted our offer. Sassuolo were promoted to B, Lecco went down. You could see back then that he had quality”.

Bonato then explained how Sassuolo signed sensation Domenico Berardi, who ironically came close to moving to Juventus this summer:

“He came from Calabria to see his brother, who was working in Modena. One of our scouts saw him in a casual game and we gave him a trial. When I presented the squad list to Eusebio Di Francesco I told him he had 24 players, but an 18-year-old who was coming from Calabria. Two months later, on opening day, he started against Cesena. He would go on to score eleven goals, without taking penalties”.
