Forget a new deal, Gabbiadini's decline may prompt him to leave Naples

Things have certainly gone south for Manolo Gabbiadini. Once claiming to “feel no fear under pressure, otherwise I wouldn’t be playing in Naples”, the former Juventus youngster looks like he did just that when he lunged at Gian Marco Ferrari, getting himself sent off against Crotone.

Admittedly his first red card in 153 Serie A games, this exclusion is still a problem for the Calcinate youngster, who really needed this game to prove that Napoli shouldn’t buy another striker after Arkadiusz Milik was carted off with an ACL tear.

And to think that Gabbiadini was supposed to be negotiating for a new deal, and that it was Napoli who were pulling off all the stops to keep him. Now, the 24-year-old needs to score in the coming games (he’ll skip Empoli, possibly Juventus too) to reconquer the city. Forget talk of a new deal until he does so. If anything, Manolo may be motivated to leave if no new contract is forthcoming by January. Frustrated by his lack of playing time and by Maurizio Sarri’s system, Gabbiadini is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
