Stat attack: How former Liverpool target Piotr Zielinski is becoming Sarri’s favourite

Piotr Zielinski moved from Udinese to Napoli in the last summer transfer window after being heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. The Poland International had put down stunning performances while out on loan at Empoli in the 2015-16 campaign and the departure of Gonzalo Higuain allowed Napoli to complete the signing of the 22-year-old as well as Amadou Diawara and Emanuele Giaccherini whose arrivals have added the depths Maurizio Sarri desperately needed to face both the Serie A and Champions League campaigns.

Zielinski was not supposed to be a regular starter at Napoli, but has played each Serie A game since the beginning of the season, starting three times.

The former Empoli and Udinese ace has 306’ minutes in Serie A and 28’ in Champions League, with Allan, his main competitor for a spot in midfield, who could only rack up 268 minutes in league games.

Despite being still without a goal in Serie A this term, Zielinski’s versatility and dynamism have played a vital role for Napoli which, once again, are Juventus’ most credible contenders for the Serie A title.
Maurizio Sarri’s side play the most attractive football in Italy at the moment and midfielder are crucial for the partenopei’s shiny performances. Zielinski should start next week-end’s Atalanta clash in place of Marek Hamsik who is likely to be given some rest after starting each game since the beginning of the season.

Even if the 22-year-old Poland International has yet to improve when it comes to running behind opponents and give cover to his defence, his first performances with Napoli have gone beyond expectations, so much so he’s becoming one of Maurizio Sarri’s favourites.
