ANALYSIS: Relationship between Sousa and Fiorentina has deteriorated

It could have been the right game to leapfrog Inter in fourth place before facing hatred rivals Juventus at the Franchi on Sunday.

However, La Viola’s away defeat against strugglers Udinese has further deteriorated the relationship between the Paulo Sousa and the club.

“I would have chosen a different approach”, Fiorentina president Mario Cognigni said yesterday during the half-time break.

On the one hand, the president and the Della Valle brothers did not enjoy yesterday’s defeat, nor the team’s recent style of play. Sousa has been making some wrongful choices over the last few games: yesterday – by instance – he benched Astori, Kalinic, Borja Valero and Josip Ilicic to play Bernardeschi, Roncaglia and Blaszczykowski.

On the other hand, the manager did not like the club’s winter transfer strategy: he had asked a new centre-back and a reliable centre midfielder: the club brought Yohan Benalouane, who’s injured and has
yet to make his debut, Tino Costa and Koné.

Speculations over the manager’s future are gathering space. In the meantime Eusebio Di Francesco has been linked with the Fiorentina job and runaway Serie A leaders Juventus will travel to the Franchi in the week-end in the worst moment of the season.
