Official: from 2018 there will be four Italian teams in the Champions League

After some uncertainty, UEFA executives have approved the new format for the Champions League for a three year period starting in 2018. The main change of course, is that four clubs from the countries that have the best coefficients will be automatically entered into the group stages of the competition.

This means that Spain (94.141 points), Germany (73.355 points), England (69.105 points) and Italy (66.832 points) are all set to benefit from the new changes. In fifth place in the current rankings is France with 50.332 points, still a long way off catching fourth placed Italy.

The new format will also mean a change to kick-off times; from 2018, two matches played on both Tuesday and Wednesday will kick-off at 19.00 CET whilst the other six will commence at 21.00 CET. There had been speculation that UEFA were going to scrap the proposed new format due to changes in their executive committee.
