REVEALED: Zamparini wanted Guidolin to take over at Palermo

  • Lorenzo Bettoni (@lorebetto)
Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini has explained his decision to sack manager Giuseppe Iachini and appoint Davide Ballardini as the team’s head coach.

“ It was a really tough decision to make. Iachini is a friend of mine and today is a sad day for me”, Zamparini told Radio Kiss Kiss.

"Iachini didn’t believe in his own players. The game against Napoli was just ridiculous. I have experience and I can tell when a manager is not in control of the situation anymore. It was important to win against Chievo, but I have never enjoyed the team’s playing style this season.”

Zamparini’s call comes as no surprise, as Palermo sit 12th in Serie A, hovering just three points above the relegation zone. In fact, the details of how the decision was taken don't sound unfamiliar in the slightest.

“The club’s Sporting Director Manuel Gerolin has nothing to do with Iachini’s dismissal. I have decided to sack Iachini after talking to other consultants.”

Palermo’s new mister, Davide Ballardini, has already taken in charge at the Sicilian club for one season in 2008, but Zamparini admits that the 51-year-old was not his favorite option for Palermo’s bench.

“I asked Guidolin first, but apparently he doesn’t want to coach anymore. I have picked a manager who knows the club already. I chose the most useful and reliable manager.”
